ALL kids should be using them. Every school, everywhere.
Most of our body's systems are negatively affected when we're sitting and the general public is starting to listen. Listen LOUD because this is a massive step forward in the healthy choice department, for numerous reasons.
Much has been published in the realms of sitting being the new smoking. With children in general, they sit a lot. A LOT. And they don't get a choice as we as adults do. If you're prepared to really break-down your child's movement habits it could well uncover some interesting facts. One hour of intense activity (as prescribed daily) will never be as collectively beneficial as constant broad-ranged activity throughout the day.
The stand-up desk is a magnificent transition tool into sound life-long habits. The benefits are countless and widely documented so the thing that I believe is super important is the developed habit of sustainable posture / positions. Practice makes permanent. And we need to re-introduce this into our schooling system as a priority (as it once was many years ago).
The key to the standing desk is less in the actual desk itself and more in the head-space or developed habit that you just keep moving. If you're stationary at a standing desk then it's just another form of sedentary position. It comes back to adaptation and how our body adapts to whatever we do or don't do with it. On its own, is simply installing the desk enough? I say no it's not but it's a damb fine step in the right direction.
Teachers and parents alike need to be educated on the fundamentals of movement. Recognising sound movement principles and implementing basic movement rules will lead to a positive outcome guaranteed. There are some tremendous examples of this in action in the US at the moment at the school level and throughout Europe standing desks have been used for over 20 years now. It works. It's proven and it's logical.
And also for our kids, isn't it simply the right thing to do?
Thanks for the reminder that a standing desk isn't the solution, it's movement. Do you have any experience or comments on using something like a anti-fatigue mat, or standing block etc? On this page they recommend standing with one foot on a box as much as possible: http://www.pyramidreviews.com/product-reviews/healthy-living/sit-stand-desk/whats-the-best-standing-desk-converter/

Thanks Mike, Specific products not really and my personal opinion directs to lifestyle choices we make for ourselves and our kids. So many variables at play so I'd not tie my recommendations to any specific products and it would be applicable to some but not all. Cheers, Chris
